All About Mules: Incorporating Fleeting Trends Into Your Wardrobe

Up until a few years ago, my entire look was insanely tragic- over-processed blonde hair, the world’s thinnest eyebrows and a less than desirable wardrobe. Between tuition fees and living expenses, I could barely afford a coffee from Starbucks while I was studying, let alone anything remotely fashionable or expensive. While this was the bane of my existence at the time, it forced me to be creative and find a more affordable alternative. While I definitely have more expendable money now than when I was a University student, I’m still cautious of my spending and knowing when and when not to splurge.

With designers showcasing what they deem to be fashionable every Spring and Fall, it’s important not to splurge on fleeting trends that may not be “in” the following season. Similar to Isabel Marant’s high-top sneakers in 2013, mules appear to be the shoe of 2017. Whether being styled with pants or a dress, mules are a versatile piece that subtly enhance any outfit. While I was initially hesitant to purchase a pair, the mules I found at H&M are simple and affordable, while staying on trend. I decided to pair my shoes with my go-to ripped jeans and another fleeting trend, a pyjama-esque blouse, for a minimalist look that can be worn in various seasons. With the City of Toronto dousing the sidewalks with salt every Winter (and subsequently ruining all of my shoes), finding affordable footwear has been a priority for me since permanently living here. With most high street stores carrying their version of this season’s “it” shoe, mules can be easily incorporated into your wardrobe without breaking the bank.
