New York Minute

Outfit Details: Dress: Topshop, Heels: H&M, Jacket: Zara, Sunglasses: Ray-ban

After a prolonged winter and dreary spring, it feels like summer has finally arrived. With winter feeling like a never-ending season in Toronto, I'm always wanting a change of scenery after months of seeing snow-covered concrete and newly-built skyscrapers. Prior to this spring, I had only been to New York City once before with my older brother. Considering we both had never been to New York, my brother and I had a laundry list of things we wanted to do and see in a city of endless sites and attractions. If voluntarily visiting Times Square wasn't bad enough, I think the best restaurant we went to was the Olive Garden- so you can only imagine what other "fine dining" we experienced while we were there. After getting all of the main tourist attractions out of my system six years ago, I was wanting to explore less congested areas and not adhere to such a strict itinerary this time. Thankfully, the person I went with had better restaurants and nightlife planned for us other than the Olive Garden.

Living up to its unpredictable reputation, we experienced the varying stages of spring while we were there in May. While it was briefly sunny one afternoon, it poured rain the remainder of the time we were there, putting a serious damper (no pun intended) on a lot of our plans. After foolishly prancing around Greenwich Village in this wrap dress, our plans to walk around Central Park became derailed after my lips turned an unflattering shade of blue.

Despite my closet consisting of a sea of dresses, I always try to veer away from anything too girly, as it reminds me of when my Mom and Grandma used to dress me like Jonbenet Ramsey (not joking, sadly). With this dress having a ruffle trim and floral print, I decided to tone down its femininity with a faux-leather jacket from Zara. Pairing a moto-style jacket with a dress is my go-to look if I'm ever in a style bind- it's polished, simple and looks seemingly effortless. What's your go-to signature look?
